Virtual Gateway, Hampden County Correctional Center

Case managers at the Hampden County Correctional Center use a unified, Web-based application to enroll people who are incarcerated in the Center into various public benefits programs that people become eligible to receive upon their release. The Web-based application, “Virtual Gateway,” enables case managers to submit a centralized, streamlined application for food stamps; MassHealth (the state’s health insurance program for certain low- and medium-income individuals); Supplemental Security Income (SSI); Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI); and other benefits. Case managers enroll people in these programs while they are incarcerated and then suspend their eligibility until the jail notifies the Social Security Administration of their release.
